The Gate of Heavenly Peace guards the southern approach to the former imperial palace in the city that used to be called Peking. Until China's last dynasty fell in 1912, it was believed that through this gate ran the main axis of the Emperor's power. In the revolutionary decades that followed, it was a meeting place for political activists, students and workers, and after the Cultural Revolution, a place for the new leader, Chairman Mao, to review his Red Guards. In the late 1970s it became again a place of protest. Jonathan D. Spence was born in Surrey in 1936 and educated at Winchester and Clare College, Cambridge. He began his study of Chinese language and history at Yale in 1959; after further study in Australia and the Far East he received his Ph.D. on seventeenth-century Chinese imperial bureaucracy in 1965. Jonathan Spence is George Burton Adams Professor of History at Yale University, where he specialises in the history of late imperial and modern China, and he has also served as Director of the Division of Humanities. He has written four books on Chinese History --- Ts'ao Yin and the K'ang-hsi Emperor: Bondservant and Master, To Change China: Western Advisers in China 1620-1920, Emperor of China: Self-portrait of K'ang-hsi and most recently The Death of Woman Wang --- and has contributed essays and articles to numerous publications. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1979. He is married to the artist Helen Alexander, and they live in Connecticut with their two sons.
