杨子恒，1964年生于甘肃通渭，1984年毕业于甘肃农业大学，1992年获北京农业大学博士学位。曾在甘肃农业大学和北京农业大学畜牧系工作以及英美等国从事博士后研究。1997年起在伦敦大学学院(University College London)生物系任教(1997-2000年任讲师，2000-72001年任副教授，2001年后任教授)，2006年当选为英国皇家学会院士(Fellow of the Royal Society)。

作为国际知名的统计进化生物学家，杨子恒博士一直致力于发展新的最大似然模型及计算机程序(PAML)，1993年起在国际学术刊物发表论文100余篇；学术兼职包括Genetics、MoIecular Biology and Evolution、Journal of Molecular Evolution和Systematic Biology等刊物副主编。

在生物信息学这个领域，顶级的工作要么是数据库，要么是软件，我指的顶级，不是说杂志影响因子的高低，而是指引用。比如，可以粗略划分，>1万次的算是顶级软件，>1千次的算是一流软件，>100次的是二流软件，>10次的算是三流软件，再少了就不入流了。要是几年都没有人引用，这个这个，只能说是纯粹灌水了。

顶级软件不多，比如BLAST, CLUSTALW这种软件，赚个几万次的引用那真是太小意思了，并且，由于这类软件一般实在是太有名，n年前就被写教科书里了，所以很多人其实是不引的。一流软件也不算多，比如MEGA, Weblogo等等。这些软件一般是细一点儿领域里的主流工具，比如weblogo一般是用于序列分析这个小领域的，其他领域用的就不算那么多。

很多年前，师兄就跟我讲，好的软件=好的名声。最典型的例子就是那个在甘肃农大混完跑北京农业大学(现在的中国农大)混了个硕士，回校继续混了两年不爽，又回北京混了个博士。我很震撼的是，这哥们64年的人，读本科要4年，硕士3年，工作2年，博士3年，读了12年的书，拿到博士学位居然也才28岁！考虑到那个年代，能上大学都是牛的不得鸟的人，能这么折腾到博士毕业，真是服了。所以说，早早念书有好处，年轻人火力足，折腾的起。于是刚开始估计是留校当青椒，没啥前途就开始周游世界做博后，并且我很佩服的是，居然能转悠个5年并且没干出什么像样的事情。好吧，这些不是高潮，后来这哥们跑到伦敦大学继续博后，34岁，看起来年龄不算大，是吧？好，反正来英国了，没事就瞎转悠吧，说不定当年砸了牛顿了苹果这回又冒出来拍了这哥们一把，从此开始了一段传奇的人生。这份简历我看了无数次，97-06，连头带尾也就10年，从博后做到英国皇家科学院院士，这不能不说是奇迹。而且，其代表工作就是开发了一个起初被无数大牛包括Nei等人鄙视到死，无论如何不肯将其方法加入MEGA中的ML算法，以及PAML软件。刚查了一下PAML的引用，3千左右吧。（来自薛宇的博客）
