一九六三年出生於西班牙，畢業於加拿大特倫特大學哲學系，從事寫作前做過各式工作：種樹工、洗碗工及守衛，旅行足跡遍及全球。他的著作《少年Pi的奇幻漂流》享譽國際，二○○二年榮獲英國曼布克獎，翻譯成四十一種語言，並蟬聯《紐約時報》暢銷排行榜長達一年。他的短篇集《故事的真相》及第一本小說《Self》皆大獲好評。他還出版了與加拿大總理的書信集《What Is Stephen Harper Reading？》。楊‧馬泰爾與作家妻子艾莉絲．瑰柏斯、兒子希奧同住在加拿大薩省沙市。
